Most plastisol is thixotropic and that means it gets thick when it sits still but gets creamy when you move it. We recommend you stir the ink for at least 60 seconds before you add any chemicals. If it is still like a brick after stirring then you should add 1-3% curable reducer by weight. This keeps your colors bright and it makes your prints feel like clouds on a t-shirt.

Why Is This Happening to Our Ink?

We’ve all been there. You open a fresh bucket of white plastisol ink and it looks like cold peanut butter. You might think the batch is bad but it is usually just science playing tricks on you. At HONG RUI SHENG we know that ink behaves differently depending on the room.

It Is All About Thixotropy

Plastisol is a mix of PVC and plasticizer and it loves to “sleep”. When it sits on your shelf for weeks the molecules bond together to create a “false body”. It feels stiff but it is not actually dry.

The Physical Change: Stirring provides shear force.

Il risultato: The bonds break and the ink flows again.

Temperature Tantrums

If your shop is cold your ink will be thick. We see this every winter. When the temperature drops below $65 the plasticizer stops moving well and your inchiostro per stampa su magliette becomes a nightmare to push through the mesh.

How We Start the Fix

Don’t reach for the chemicals yet! We follow a strict process at our facility to ensure we don’t ruin the HONG RUI SHENG INK before the job even starts.

1. The Power Stir

Use a sturdy spatula or a drill mixer. We prefer a drill for big 5-gallon buckets. Stir it hard for two minutes. You will see the ink turn from a solid block into a glossy liquid. This simple move can drop the viscosity by 30% without spent a dime on additives.

2. The Temperature Check

We keep our production floor at a steady 72°F If your ink is cold you can put the bucket near the dryer for a few minutes. Just don’t let it get hot or you will turn the whole bucket into a giant rubber puck!

3. Adding the Right Stuff

If stirring doesn’t work you need a phthalate-free plastisol ink reducer. We call this “curable reducer.”

Expert Tip: Never use mineral spirits or water. Here is how we do it.

Practice 1: Use the 3% Rule. Start small. You can always add more reducer but you can never take it out. If you add too much your inchiostro plastisol ad alta opacità will become transparent and your prints will look washed out.

Practice 2: Check Your Mesh. If you are using a very fine mesh like 230 or 305 you need thinner ink. Thick ink will clog the holes and you will end up fighting the screen all day.

Practice 3: Store it Right. Keep your lids tight! If air gets in the plasticizers can migrate and your plastisol ink will get “dry” over time.

A Story From the Press

Last month a big client called us. They were trying to print a 5-color job on black hoodies. Their anti migration printing ink was so thick it was pulling the hoodies off the platens. They were frustrated and they wanted to quit for the day.

We told them to stop and breathe. We had them stir their ink with a drill for three minutes then add just a splash of reducer. Suddenly the ink cleared the screen with half the pressure. Their production speed doubled and the hoodies had a soft finish that felt like luxury. That is the power of proper viscosity management!

Why You Should Care

If your ink is too thick you have to push harder. Pushing harder hurts your wrists and it wears out your squeegees. It also causes “fibrillation” where the shirt fibers poke through the ink. When your ink is at the perfect “honey” consistency it sits on top of the fabric and looks crisp.

inchiostri plastisol

FAQ

D1: Can I use water to thin my plastisol ink?

No!
